Cartasia 2018 - Call for Artist

February 02, 2018

Cartasia is the International Paper Biennial.
Founded in 2004, it's committed to promoting tradition, culture, sustainability and innovation throughout the world of art and design, and it's now heading into its ninth edition.
The Call for Entries – Design invites creators, designers, architects and companies around the world to look for projects or innovative and sustainable ideas to deal with one or more worldwide emergencies (housing, energy, water, food, hygiene, childcare, the elderly, people with disabilities).
The Biennial is based on the assumption that contemporary young creators, designers and architects are used to designing today thinking about tomorrow; a tomorrow when we'll overcome the limitations of today thanks to new technologies, architecture and products that will help improve the quality of life, bringing us greater well-being, along with more comfort and equality.

PURPOSE
The aim of this contest is to think about todays design in view of future sustainability, thinking of innovation as the anticipation of the needs and desires of tomorrow. Sustainability, a key theme of the Biennial, is one of the most important concepts to keep in mind when it comes to redesigning and innovation: new products, new spaces and / or new uses and functions.
The contest will involve a selection of prototype projects (ideas, boards, videos), the exhibition of objects or interesting solutions in answer to the emergency theme and above all the use of paper and its derivatives.

THEME
The theme of the IX edition is “Chaos and Silence”.
Today, an excess of stimuli, news, positive or negative notions, induce human beings into a state of numbness due to an information overload. This numbness makes us perceive all inputs equal to others: the enormous quantity of stress we are subjected to makes distinguishing the specific qualities of each stimulus difficult. The world around us becomes confusing and indecipherable. In this context the search for silence, clarity and peace, appears to be an essential need for contemporary society in response to this developing chaos.
On the other hand, silence can be synonymous with isolation, disconnection, refusal of confrontation.
Continuous movement, dynamic and steady development, the relationship between individual minds, make chaos a great creative possibility; signs that it's extremely alive, responsive, diverse and interlinked, as is today's society.
The Biennial invites artists to create based on this topic and with their own personal approach.
