The BSI Architectural Foundation is a Swiss foundation of public utility, whose aim is, more specifically, the promotion of knowledge, education and research in the field of architecture. Its principal achievement is the BSI Swiss Architectural Award, promoted since 2007 every two years under the patronage of the Swiss Federal Office for Culture and the Academy of architecture in Mendrisio (Università della Svizzera italiana), and with the coordination of the Archivio del Moderno of the Academy of architecture. The BSI Swiss Architectural Award aims at recognizing architects from all over the world who, through their work, have significantly contributed to contemporary architecture, in particular by demonstrating environmental awareness. The winner will receive the sum of 100.000 CHF, which qualifies the BSI Swiss Architectural Award as one of the most lucrative architectural prizes in the world. Candidates to the Award are nominated by a committee of advisors composed by architects and critics of undisputed international renown. Any architect aged under 50 in the year in which the Award is launched, of any nationality, may be nominated, provided that they have realized at least three significant works that meet the aims of the competition. Every candidate present three works, each documented by a A0 panel, to a jury composed by five members, presided by Mario Botta. The two first editions of the BSI Swiss Architectural Award have been won by Solano Benitez from Paraguay (2008) and Diébédo Francio Kéré from Burkina Faso (2010). The laureate of the third edition will be announced around mid-summer and awarded on the occasion of the prize-giving ceremony, which will take place on 20th September 2012 at the Accademia di architettura in Mendrisio.
